CLASSIFICATION OF AROMATIC SUBSTANCES |
اﷲ |
1. Substances applied to the body whilst in Ihraam are classified into 3 groups:
A. Natural aromatic substances and those classified as perfumes, such as musk, camphor, sandalwood, rose-flower, saffron, henna, basil, marshmallow, ginger, cinnamon, elachi, (cardamom), cloves, violet, aloe-wood, benzoin, Ambar, Waris, Kasme, Loubaan, Chameli, Bilaa, Nargis, Khitmi, Oud etc.
B. Substances which are neither natural aromatics nor classified as animal perfumes, nor used in making perfumes, (e.g. animal fat), can be applied to the body without any restriction.
C. If substances which are not aromatic by nature but are sometimes used as perfumes, or medicines, and are also used in making perfumes, (e.g. olive oil, mustard oil, sesame oil and coconut oil), are applied to the body as perfumes, then they will be classified with those mentioned in (1A), and will be subject to the same laws.
2. If these oils are used as ingredients in food, or are applied as a lotion to chaffed skins or for chilblains, then there is no objection whatsoever. This ruling is subject to such oils being free from fragrant admixtures. If they are perfumed, then they will be included in the list of (1A).
